Ziyad Knio, MD, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology

"I have dedicated time for my research pursuits, which is very important to me, and teaching is a very big part of my role, whether I am doing clinical teaching in the OR or ICU environments or more dedicated lecture style teaching within the department. I get a lot of career satisfaction out of being a researcher and an educator. And in fact, I think it makes me a much better clinician, and I would bet that my colleagues all feel the same way."

Excellence Across Every Specialty

UVA Anesthesiology is home to a diverse team of general and subspecialty faculty dedicated to exceptional patient care, innovative research, and the education of future anesthesiologists. Our faculty are deeply engaged in the community and committed to advancing the field through collaboration and scholarship. Clinical divisions include Adult Multi-Specialty, Cardiothoracic, Critical Care, Liver Transplant, Neuro, Obstetrics, Pain Management, Pediatrics, Perioperative, and Regional Anesthesia.
"This department has been incredibly supportive of my academic career. Too many mentors to count, departmental support for research projects, a highly-talented clinical research team that makes designing and implementing clinical trials easy, all in the setting of an overall culture of inquisitiveness focused on constantly improving the health of our patients and patients everywhere."
John McNeil, MD
Cardiac Anesthesia Division Chief
Associate Professor of Anesthesiology

“There is nothing innately sublime about working in an academic medical center.  In a lot of ways, it's the post office with needles and anesthetic gases.  So why do it?  That's easy: the people.  No other job in medicine will  surround you with so many passionate and well-educated people who share a singular focus on providing the best care.  It makes the many struggles of modern medicine fade away, and the day-to-day interactions  with my peers keep bringing this introvert back for more."

Matt Holland, MD

Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine

“Working in a collaborative environment with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, in an atmosphere that fosters growth and career advancement, where saving critically ill patients is the ultimate reward for a provider."

Akram Zaaqoq, MD
Medical Director of Thoracic and Cardiovascular (TCV) Intensive Care & Associate Professor

"I am grateful for many things in our department: the level of organization and care taken at every event to ensure the best outcome, the wonderful facility we get to call our home away from home, the many opportunities that have been created to thrive in the numerous avenues open to our profession, but most of all, I am grateful for the people I get to work with every day."
Lliam Brannigan, MD

Interim STICU Co-Medical Director
Associate Professor

"I value the team mentality that exists in the intensive care unit (CT-ICU).  There CT-ICU employs a large number of highly-specialized clinicians, all with different backgrounds and training, but because of our culture the unit is very cohesive and is really able to focus on what is best for the patient, while also balancing other areas of mission (e.g. education)."

Robert Theile, MD
Critical Care Anesthesia Division Chief
Professor of Anesthesiology

"I think the reason that I love it so much is the people...what has kept me here for more than 20 years is all of the incredible people that I get to work with every day. That isn't just my department, but it's the surgeons that I work with daily; it's the nursing staff; the leadership team; definitely the thing that makes UVA so special."

What our residents are saying

Q: What factors led you to choose UVA for residency?

A: 1) The vibes. Honestly, during my zoom interview season, UVA had the most clearly communicated and best culture of all my interviews. I felt like this would be a great fit for me, and I have not been disappointed. My best advice for applicants when making a decision for residency is to follow their gut, and I followed mine for UVA and I 'm very happy with my residency choice.
2) Our education. Specifically, our unique intern year experience that includes 6 months of anesthesia and whose other intern year rotations are tailored to our overall learning as anesthesiologists. After intern year, the clinical education we receive at UVA in general is excellent. I wanted to feel competent and confident when I left residency to go on and be independent as a junior attending, and I felt UVA would offer me that experience and it has. I learned from my interview day, and have now heard repeatedly from outside sources, that UVA is known for training very good clinicians, and I think this is due to our environment, our teachers, the case-mix we are exposed to, the acuity of our cases, and the fact that there are very few fellows, so we get very good cases to learn from.
3) The alumni network. I wanted the best chance to get a great job after I finished residency, since that is the whole goal of completing residency is setting oneself up for the beginning of their career. Whether this would be fellowship or straight to an attending job, on my interview day the UVA network was advertised and it has not disappointed now that I have been here for four years. The connections we have through our current attendings and alumni spreads across the U.S. and includes fellowship, private, and academic jobs.

Q: Can you share a moment when you felt especially supported by your co-residents or faculty?

A: It was a random weekday at 6:30 AM. This is usual a crucial time in the hospital because there is a lot of turnover happening with the night and day residents and sometimes things can be lost in communication. I had a late room start that day and I heard an anesthesia stat go off on the overhead. I knew that at that time, there may not be a lot of help up there because of the aforementioned issues, and because I had a late room I decided to go up there to help. When I got there, I saw 2 of my fellow colleagues also approaching the OR and together we were able to help the night resident sort things out. It just goes to show that the residents here are always willing to go above and beyond, even if it's not their responsibility, and that morning I was especially grateful to be at a place like UVA, because someone will always have your back!
