JOB DESCRIPTION

The Lukens Lab (www.Lukenslab.com) in the Department of Neuroscience, Harrison Family Translational Research Center in Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases, and the Center of Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG) at the University of Virginia is seeking to hire a motivated Senior Staff Scientist to investigate how the immune system contributes to Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. The Lukens Lab is particularly interested in interrogating the roles played by inflammasomes, immune-based DNA damage sensors, ITAM/ITIM receptors, and microbiota in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease.

  • This individual will manage their own independent research projects, contribute to the training of other lab members, present their work at lab meetings and conferences, and aid in writing grant applications and manuscripts from the lab.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

The University of Virginia is located in picturesque and historical Charlottesville, with outstanding schools, affordable housing, is less than two hours from Washington, DC, and only an hour away from Richmond, VA.

Qualified candidates must have:

  • PhD or MD, excellent written and oral communication skills, and have published first author publications

  • Experience in grant writing and desire to contribute to the writing of lab grants and manuscripts

  • Interest and confidence in exploring new research directions

  • High level of motivation and technical capacity to drive research projects

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to work with others as part of a team, including both teaching and learning from others

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong background in neurodegenerative disease research, neurobiology, or immunology

  • Experience with mouse models of neurodegenerative disease

  • Experience with one or more of the following methods: confocal microscopy, cell or tissue culture, molecular biology, RNA-sequencing and bioinformatics, behavior studies, and flow cytometry

  • Affinity for science writing


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

The position will remain open until filled. This is an exempt-level, benefitted position.
